Andrew Goodwin's Music Video Theory 2

Andrew Goodwin points out characteristics and features that can be found in music videos -

  • Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics. (e.g. stage performance in metal videos, dance routine for boy/girl band, aspiration in Hip Hop).

  • There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The lyrics are represented with images. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

  • There is a relationship between music and visuals. The tone and atmosphere of the visual reflects that of the music. (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

  • The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

  • There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, mirrors, stages, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

  • The artist may develop motifs or iconography that recur across their work (a visual style)

  • There are often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).

Preliminary Video - Reflection Questions

Preliminary Video - Reflection Questions 1.What did you find most challenging about recreating your chosen video and why? (Remember to think about storyboarding, props, actors, filming, editing, finance) The most challenging thing about recreating the video was the positioning of shots and giving detailed instructions to the actors in order for them to recreate the video as accurately as possible. There were various tricky movements that the actors had to undertake which consisted of drumming at eh correct time to the song, using body language and movement to recreate the way the actors moved in the video. As well as camera movements, one was a drag shot which was difficult as we had to do it perfectly so it was the same speed as what it was in the video and so that no carpet was shown on the picture and that it was all a white background which would make it professional. 2.What problems did you face whilst filming? (Consider the logistics; could you get everyone together to film, did you have rehearsal time, were you able to frame your shots effectively, could you convincingly play/mime?) The problem was getting everyone together to film at the same time, as we had four people that needed to be in the shot and then someone recording at times. This made it difficult for us to shoot the video in the designated time but we were able to do so. Another problem we faced was having the person in the shot to be able to properly play the drums. AS the actor we used struggled with playing the drums and this resulted in some shots not being as good as they could of we had someone who could actually play the drums. This shows that people who know how to play specific instruments are needed for the video to look as good as possible. Furthermore, another problem was the clothing for the people in our video. We didn’t have the correct clothing available that we could use to represent he artist in the real video, so we just had to wear what we did to school in the video and stick to that clothing so it didn’t look weird in the video if people’s clothes kept on changing. A final problem was some actor’s confidence, as they weren’t prepared to actually sing the song so this resulted in them just miming it. I feel it would look better and more realistic if the actor in the video does actually sing. 3.How did you overcome these problems? (did you alter shots/props, solve lighting issues etc?) We made sure we arranged to shoot during school time, as after school at least one of the four would be busy which would mean we wouldn’t be able to film the video. Be booked out a room at school so we were sure we were able to film the video. We alerted all the members involved the time, date and location of the shoot through Facebook. We solved the problem of singing the song by turning the music up really loud so that the person who was singing couldn’t be heard. 4.Which problems could you not overcome? (Were some instruments harder than others to source, could you recreate the look of an artist, could you dress the set, were some shots impossible to emulate?) One problem we could not solve was the drum playing of one of our members. As we had already started filming, we didn’t want to start again and get someone else in to play the drums who was better as that would be a waste of time and we were tight on time to finish the video. Another problem we could not solve was the clothing, as we did not have enough time to find or purchase clothes needed for the video. 5.What next steps are you going to take? (learn how to: film/edit/light/perform/makeup etc) Personally, I want to learn how to efficiently film and edit a video. As I feel that will be my role in our group when it comes to producing the real video. To achieve this, I will ask for tips of my teachers and do some research into it through YouTube.

Lyrics - San Cisco

"Awkward" Why do the stars fall at night? Well are you here? I got your message last night You didn't get mine 'cause you've been calling me for days Why do you hold on so tight? What do you fear? I got your message last night You didn't get mine 'cause you've been calling me for days Da da da da da da da da da... I wouldn't have gone to dinner If I knew that you'd agree with everything I say I left a message last night You haven't called back I've been calling you for days I have my keys at the gate My mind is made up to make a quick escape I left a message last night You haven't called back I've been calling you for days Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo... I saw you at dinner last night You were holding his hand I've been watching you for days I thought I saw you last night Get out of my life you've been stalking me for days Da da da da da da da da da...
